Children’s Oral Hygiene Tips for Parents
A healthy smile starts with good habits at home. Here are some simple tips for keeping your child’s teeth strong and cavity-free:
Poor Oral Hygiene
Children often miss hard-to-reach areas when brushing or flossing. Adult supervision helps ensure they’re cleaning properly and for the full two minutes.
Dietary Habits
Sugar and acid are the main causes of tooth decay. Encourage tooth-friendly options such as fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, yoghurt, and water instead of soft drinks or sticky snacks.
Fluoride
Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and protects against cavities. Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste and encourage spitting (not swallowing) after brushing.
Early Dental Check-Ups
We recommend scheduling your child’s first visit when their first tooth erupts or by their first birthday. Early visits help them feel familiar and relaxed in the dental setting while allowing us to catch potential problems early.

Fillings
At Tankard Dental, we are a mercury-free clinic, offering white (tooth-coloured) fillings made from composite resin that matches your natural tooth shade. White fillings are used to restore teeth affected by decay, replace older fillings, or repair chips and cracks.
Unlike traditional amalgam, composite resin fillings are metal-free, bond securely to the tooth, and blend seamlessly with your smile. Your dentist will discuss whether this treatment is the best option for you based on your individual needs.
Root Canal Treatment
At Tankard Dental, we provide advanced root canal therapy using the latest technology to ensure precision and comfort. Root canal treatment (also known as endodontic therapy) is used to treat infection or inflammation inside the pulp — the nerve and blood vessel centre of your tooth.
When the pulp becomes infected, it can cause severe pain, swelling, and temperature sensitivity.
Common causes include:
- Deep decay or breakdown of a filling or crown
- Tooth trauma or cracks
- Gum disease or infection
- Repeated dental work or wear
Symptoms may include:
- Persistent tooth pain
- Sensitivity to heat or cold
- Tooth discolouration
- Tenderness or swelling in surrounding gums
The goal of root canal therapy is to save your natural tooth rather than extract it. When properly treated and cared for, the tooth can last many years — often for life.
Mouthguards
Protecting your smile starts with prevention. We strongly recommend custom-fitted mouthguards for all contact sports and active hobbies — for both adults and children. Our in-house laboratory fabricates mouthguards that are durable, comfortable, and available in a wide range of colours to suit your personality or team.

Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. For some, they erupt normally — but for many, complications like overcrowding, impaction, or misalignment can occur, leading to pain, infection, or damage to nearby teeth. A simple examination and X-ray helps us assess risks early and recommend removal if needed.
Reasons for removal include:
- Impaction: Teeth trapped under gums or growing at an angle, causing pain or infection
- Crowding: Pressure on other teeth, leading to misalignment
- Infection: Food and bacteria trapped around partially erupted teeth
- Damage: Pressure or decay affecting adjacent teeth
Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that causes pauses or shallow breathing during sleep. Symptoms may include loud snoring, daytime fatigue, and restless sleep. At Tankard Dental, we can design a custom oral appliance that helps keep the airway open by gently repositioning the lower jaw forward.
Ask our dentists about whether a dental sleep appliance is right for you.
